What happened

Ben Shelton has added Juan Carlos Ferrero to his coaching team for the 2027 season. Shelton and Ferrero confirmed the move on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

Ferrero is joining Shelton’s setup alongside Shelton’s father and coach, Bryan Shelton. He is being added to the team, not replacing anyone.

The announcement has drawn attention because Shelton is coming off a breakthrough 2026 season and is now strengthening his support team for the next year.

Why this matters

Ferrero is a major name in tennis. He was a former world No. 1, won the 2003 French Open, and previously coached Carlos Alcaraz.

Ferrero coached Alcaraz for about seven years before that partnership ended in December 2025. During that period, Rediff reported that Ferrero helped Alcaraz win six Grand Slam titles.

That history is why the appointment is being discussed widely in India: it connects Shelton, Alcaraz and Ferrero in one story, with clear relevance for the next tennis season.

Shelton’s form and the coaching angle

Shelton’s profile rose sharply after he reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open in September 2026. That result is a major reason the coaching move is attracting attention.

As of 5 November 2026, Shelton had already qualified for his second consecutive Nitto ATP Finals. He was expected to begin working with Ferrero during the offseason.

Former American player John Isner said a future Shelton vs Alcaraz match would be especially compelling if Ferrero is in Shelton’s box, and suggested the move shows Shelton is not satisfied with being ranked around No. 4 in the world.

What to watch next

The key thing to watch is how quickly Ferrero fits into Shelton’s current team and whether the partnership starts before the 2027 season begins.

Fans will also watch for any Shelton-Alcaraz meeting, since Ferrero’s past work with Alcaraz adds an extra layer of interest to that matchup.

For Indian tennis followers, this is mainly a high-profile coaching change involving a player who has just made his first Grand Slam final and is now aiming higher.
