What happened

Lionsgate confirmed on 5 November 2026 that an untitled animated John Wick prequel has been greenlit. That confirmation is the main reason the topic is trending in the United Kingdom today.

Keanu Reeves has officially signed on to return as John Wick, reprising the role and joining the producing team. The announcement turned a long-discussed spin-off into an active production story.

What the film is about

The new film will focus on Wick’s “Impossible Task”, the single-night mission to eliminate all his rivals so he can escape his obligation to the High Table and be with Helen.

The story takes place before the first John Wick film, so it expands the character’s backstory rather than continuing the events of the existing movies.

Who is involved

Shannon Tindle, who directed Ultraman: Rising, will direct the film. Ryan and Kaz Firpo, the writers of Marvel’s Eternals, are credited with the screenplay.

Producers include Reeves, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Point Grey. Lionsgate-related reporting also describes John Wick as a billion-dollar franchise.

What to watch next

As of 7 November 2026, there is no release date, final title, additional voice cast, or animation studio announced. Those details remain unknown.

Jon Feltheimer, Lionsgate’s CEO, has said the movie is already in pre-production, so more official casting and production details may follow in the coming weeks or months.
